How to get pregnant with blocked Fallopian tubes?

The Fallopian tube is where the sperm and egg meets. Common causes of Fallopian tubes blockage include female genital tract infection, previous abdominal surgery, endometriosis and birth defects. Blockage on one side of the Fallopian tubes will reduce the chance of natural conception by 50%. If both sides are blocked, natural conception is not possible.

Laparoscopic surgery can be used to unblock the Fallopian tubes. However, it only works for some of the cases and has a low success rate. Note that the chances of getting ectopic pregnancy increase after surgery.

Therefore, IVF is the best option if both sides of Fallopian tubes are blocked.

If only one side of the Fallopian tubes is blocked and the other side is patent, there is still 50% chance of getting pregnant. Having injections that increase the number of eggs ovulating can increase the chance of conceiving.

If there is no blockage in tubes and husband’s sperm is healthy, but still cannot conceive after trying for 1 year (under 35 years old female) or 6 months (over 35 years old female), patients can consider taking medications that increase number of eggs ovulating, then place pre-washed sperm into the uterus for increasing the chance of getting pregnant.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is the standard method for checking if there is any blockage in tubes. It involves injection of some contrast solution to the uterus and an X-RAY examination. It must be done between day 7-10 of menstrual cycle. Patients cannot have any intercourse from day 1 of menstrual cycle until the day of performing HSG.

Additional charge is required for doctor’s consultation.

Fee: $3400
